California elephant seals

While driving along the hwy 1 coast in California, we stopped at an elephant seal lookout near Cambria. I ended up taking 120 pictures of the seals, these are a few of my favourites.

I would have like the pictures to turn out a bit better than they did, it was hard to get contrast in the photos since the seals are the same colour as the sand.

Large bull males have noses that look like elephant trunks. Unfortunately these males were still out at sea when we were there so we didn't get to photograph them. They only come on land for a couple of months a year to mate, usually during the winter months. In some of the photos we saw, they really look like elephant trunks.

Taking pictures of the elephant seals.

The majority of the seals slept in holes they dug in the sand

I love this closeup of one of the tails.

Posing for the camera.
Two males fighting, one of these guys was a troublemaker looking to fight everyone on the beach.
I think he's giving me the finger
